In a significant legal development, a habeas corpus petition has been lodged with the Supreme Court on behalf of Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national charged in an alleged plot to assassinate Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The plea, filed by Gupta's family, urges the Indian government's intervention to secure his release from detention in the Czech Republic.

US federal prosecutors recently charged Nikhil Gupta, alleging his involvement in a foiled plot to kill Pannun, an American and Canadian citizen. An unnamed Indian official is implicated in the indictment, accused of hiring someone in the US for the assassination. The Czech Republic, acting on the request of the US, arrested Gupta, confirming his provisional custody.

Charges against Gupta include conspiracy to commit murder for hire, according to US authorities. India, expressing concern, has initiated an inquiry into the matter, describing it as a "matter of concern." Principal Deputy NSA Jonathan Finer, during his recent visit to India, emphasized the importance of accountability in the investigation. The White House acknowledged India's establishment of an inquiry committee but did not specify the officials involved in discussions.
