Case registered after petrol bomb thrown at Tamil Nadu Governor's house
Hours after the petrol bomb attack on Raj Bhavan in Chennai, the police on Thursday registered a case.
The case was registered under sections 436 (Mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506(ii) (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC, Act 3 of the Explosive Substances Act and 4 of TNPPDL Act.
A man, who was arrested, threw a Molotov cocktail, locally referred to as a ‘petrol bomb’, at the main gate of the governor’s residence on Wednesday.
At around 2.45 pm on Wednesday, history-sheeter, Karuka Vinoth, threw two containers of petrol at the main gate of Raj Bhavan. He had walked from Saidapet Court where he had taken petrol from parked motorbikes. Vinoth then set two bottles on fire and threw them at the main gate of Raj Bhavan. The police team deployed on security stopped him before he could throw two more bottles.
Vinoth had already been arrested for throwing a petrol bomb at the BJP office in Chennai two years ago and was in Puzhal Prison and he was reportedly released only three days back.
The governor’s Deputy Secretary, T Sengottaiyan, lodged a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner. However, he alleged that the police didn’t act promptly and trivialised the serious incident as a minor offence.
In his complaint, Sengottaiyan mentioned that the brazen act was a consequence of a series of public threats against Governor RN Ravi.
“The governor has faced vicious attacks using filthy abuses and wielding threats to his life mostly by DMK and its allies in the public meetings and through their social media. These threats are intended to overawe the Governor and restrain him in discharging his Constitutional duties,” Sengottaiyan said in the complaint.
