SSC recruitment ‘scam’: Minister Partha Chatterjee arrested; close aide Arpita Mukherjee detained
West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee taken to hospital for a medical test. TMC is keeping a close watch on the developments, says party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday arrested West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in connection with its probe into the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam case, where transactions worth crores of rupees were allegedly made for the appointment of teachers recruited through the SSC, his advocate confirmed. This is the first arrest by the ED in the case.
Chatterjee, the state Parliamentary Affairs, Commerce and Industry, and Electronics & IT Minister, earlier held the education portfolio.“Yes, he has been arrested. We have not been given the seizure list or the arrest memo yet. He will be produced in court today. We have been asked to come to CGO Complex,” Anindya Raut, Chatterjee’s advocate, said. Massive security has been deployed at the CGO Complex in Kolkata.
However, no official statement has been issued by the ED yet on Chatterjee’s arrest.
The arrest came after a day after the central agency carried out raids across the state on Friday and said that they had seized Rs 20 crore from the house of Arpita Mukherjee, a close associate of Chatterjee. Mukherjee has been detained, ED sources said, and is likely to be arrested.
Meanwhile, Chatterjee has been taken to ESI Joka for a medical test and will be taken to Mukherjee’s house in Tollygunge, Diamond City, for a face-to-face interrogation.
